What’s On

7th July Bert Bailey Memorial Vets 100

The Bert Bailey Memorial Vets 100  will be held on the 7th July 2024.  Starting 8-9:30 from Tarporley and heading out beyond Overton. Not too hilly!

It is not a Sportif; it is a social 100mile event for riders who have reached at least 50 years of age by 1st March 2024.  There is a generous time limit and riders are allocated to led groups and there is a staggered start to try to prevent bunching on the road and to allow the catering stops to cope. Riders can indicate who they would like to ride with and the average speed they intend to ride at (not including stops) ranging from 11 to 14 mph – it is definitely an all-day event, and the speed of the groups is dictated by the slowest rider.  It is a  calorie positive event with village hall stops for morning coffee, lunch & afternoon tea (as well as stop for soft drinks on the final section and tea/coffee at the start & finish).  It is not an event for people who want to get a fast 100miles

Entries close by the 20th June or when the event is full – which ever happens first.

Achievements

Ian Moore – Congratulations!

Congratulations to Ian who finished 2nd in the World Series Gravel in Sardinia, wearing Ruthin colours!

“So close to a rainbow World Series jersey. A late Canadian entry got it, well done to him. It was a very tough hilly course and pleased my strength held up. The last 12km was on road into a headwind and I finished on my own. On to The Gralloch Gravel World Series Gravel race on 18th May. See if I can go one better!! Oh boy this gravel racing is hard. Respect to gravel riders!!”

Congratulations for finishing 3rd in the M70-74 age category in 1:32:52 on Sunday 14th April at the Harlech Sprint Duathlon Welsh Championship age group Event.
The first leg, a 5k beach run, was better than I expected as the sand was firm although the bit through the dunes definitely wasn’t.
A 22k cycle was next up which was flat except for the slog up to Harlech town but at least it was downhill for a while after the turnround point and flat back to transition.
Finally a 2.2k run culminating in the climb up to the finish in the castle.

7th April Reliability Ride

Another year, another super tough VCM Reliability Ride, well supported by RCC. The organiser reckoned that the event raised about £900 for Prostate Cancer UK.

First at the British Masters Cycling Percy Stallard national series competition race at Darley Moor Derbyshire, 10th March. I think we all needed treatment for hyperthermia as it was a very wet and cold ride!!

Summer Long Rides

We plan to organise some longer rides during the summer, typically on the last Sunday of the month.

Details will be emailed to members as we decide on routes. In the past we have ridden to Conwy, and met at Betws-y-Coed to ride the Brailsford Way to Caernarfon. But other routes are possible.

Gravel Rides

We are still looking for someone to plan some gravel rides for the club…

Thursday Evening Training Rides

We hope to run a fast Chain-gang and a slower, structured fitness ride on Thursday evenings for the summer months, depending on demand. Watch out for emails with details.
